In my previous thread in the Hardware section I expressed my liking for the "old" format monitors, typically 1280 pixels wide x 1028 pixels high. Shown in yellow in the drawing below.
The reason for this preference is that I do a lot of work with photographs, and that format allows me to see my photos much larger on the screen as it more closely approximates their shape. Nearly all of the newer monitors supplied with computers today are what is known as "Letterbox" format or 16:9, having a native display resolution of 1920 x 1080. Shown in pink below
In case you have ever wondered what screen is "biggest" for a given size,I have done the math for you, bearing in mind that screen dimensions are measured diagonally from corner to corner.

For a 19" screen, the 1280 x 1028 has an area of 176.247 square inches and the 1920 x 1080 has an area of 154.256 square inches which equates to a little over 14% greater area.
In short, I find that the old style screens are better for my purposes although they are nearly 30% dearer to buy.
