"I'm Bored"

« on: 01 September, 2010, 06:28:31 PM »

I've been mucking around all day reinstalling some of the software that I use on the new computer, which uses Windows 7.

I'm quite impressed so far, getting online was completely painless, in fact it could be said to be automatic, as I never had to do a thing other than install my preferred Web Browswer and Email client. I detest Outlook Express and Internet Explorer, and use Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox in their place.  People tell me that the Microsoft equivalents now have similar features, but I now stay with what I know.

My main disapointment is that my very favourite photo editor, Corel Paintshop Pro X2 will not load for some reason, giving me error messages about CRC Errors and data .cab files not unpacking. I know that the software is OK as I reinstalled it on my laptop with XP just to be sure.  I know that it is inevitable that there will be compatibility issues whenever we change over Operating systems, but it is annoying never the less, no to mention, expensive.  I am assured that the new version (X3) is Windows7 compatible but they want $80 to upgrade.

So, I decided to download a Trial version to check,... you guessed it, same problems....

I read all of the related FAQs on Corel's website, only to find a thousand others all suffering the same fate, some were having limited success with various strategies, others were no better off,.... the same old , same old it seems. The only consistent thread running through the whole site was that there are a lot of people very disapointed with Corel's Support, the general concensus seeming to be that they are endavouring to knock Microsoft off their perch for consistently poor customer satisfaction.

more later....

At last I seem to be having a little success. I have managed to load Corel Paintshop Pro and a few less important programs, the annoying thing being that over the past week I have tweeked so many settings and  run so many diagnostic/corrective programs that I have absolutely no idea of what it was or what combination of things that has led to some success.

The other annoying thing is that for some reason Windows still insists on telling me that Software that I know works on other Operating Systems, has CRC errors and the .cab files are corrupted. Some of these having been just downloaded from the websites of the company's concerned,... like Adobe Reader, a program that is almost impossible to do without today.

So,...  some wins and still some frustrations. Sad

Having now had Windows 7 for a few weeks, I feel that I can say that overall,  I like it,... however I still feel that we (users) are being roostered by Microsoft.

If Microsoft are going to release a new OS, I think that it is only reasonable that the users get a fully functional and secure product, so long as MS continue to release beta versions and continually rectify the errors that users find, I think that the program should be a give away. After all, MS are having their software tested by people who should be employed as beta testers.

This frustrating problem has been evident, to me anyway,  since the first release of Windows 95 and I think reached its peak of dissatisfaction with Windows Vista, a program so flaky that the US Government forbade its use on any of it's computers.  It seems that Microsoft barely get their latest OS working acceptably and they release a new version, and the story starts all over again. Not only do users then have to pay for a new version, but they have to go through the whole frustrating process again, finding all of the faults and omissions and hopefully having them rectified by Microsoft, at just about the time that they are due to release their new version,...  Arrrgggghhh.

What led to this little tantrum was a newly discovered omission in Windows 7, not a great deal, but very frustrating to persons such as myself who print their own photos.

Now I know how you are all aware of my reluctance to spend my hard earned cash, Yes,... I'm a legend among the miserable.  In the past I had worked out that the cheapest and best way to print 6" x 4"  photos was to buy sheets of A4 sized paper at 15c each, and print three photos on each, giving a cost of 5c per photo for the paper. Using a CISS (Continuous Ink Supply System) on my printer as described in an earlier thread. the cost of ink is almost negligible, probably working out at less than 1c per photo.

In previous versions of windows, there has been a way to do this using the standard Photo Printing Wizard direct from "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer",.. but, for reasons known only outo themselves, and as it seems Microsoft is wont to do, they did not include the ability to do this in Windows 7, leaving only the ability to print two 6 x 4 photos on a sheet of A4 paper.

There are ways around it, but as near as I can find it involves having to load another photo editing program, which could be expensive and time wasting. I remembered that ACDSee Photo Manager had the ability to do this and so for me it was only a small inconvenience.

What I still can't come to grips with, is why they would leave out a very useful function that they already owned the code for Huh
