"I'm Bored"

« on: 07 August, 2010, 02:53:20 PM »

I normally like to think that I'm a fairly "determined" (read pig headed if you must) type of individual but my latest problems are giving me a real head ache, and I feel that I have a long way to go yet.

About two weeks ago we were making adjustments to our home phone plan through Telstra, and were informed that we could lower our mounthly bill by about 15% and also have 100Gb of Internet usage. We looked at all the options for a day or so and decided to change to the plan at the beginning of our next billing period.

This came and went, and the 100 Gigglebites of usage duly appeared, now, having all of this extra ADSL capacity and being a miserable bugger who doesn't like to see anything going to waste, I started to think of ways to use more of it as i estimated that 15Gb would see me out. Finally I thought that it might be a good idea to buy a WiFi modem and set up TLWs 'puta as well. It should be simple enough,.....

More to follow.....

Is that the same as a wireless router?  Our son put in a wireless router and the laptop picks up the internet anywhere in the house. He can use the laptop and I can still use my computer at the same time.

We've got a wireless modem.. Billion. Works a treat throughout the whole house and parts of the garden!
The MOTH (Man Of The House) is as happy as a pig in the proverbial. He can sit outside on the back patio, and smoke a ciggy whilst perusing Facebook!  Grin

Best damn invention. Ever!

Ahhh,.. but we've only told you the good part so far.

I typed this up earlier and was interupted during the course of which I inadvertently closed my page losing my work so I'll keep it "relatively" short. Roll Eyes    Believe me this is only a light skim over what i have done in the last 36 hours or so.

After setting up the new modem and installing the software etc., I found that my 'puta never had an Ethernet Controller, so I spent the next half a day finding the files, as the original Motherboard CD that came with my 'puta never had any networking drivers Huh,  Darn!!! and Golly!, as our American friends would say. My original plan being, to connect my 'puta via Ethernet and TLW's which is in an adjoining room via wireless.

I don't know if any of you have gone looking for drivers of late, but it's a real task. The once free driver sites have all seemed to become vendors of software that diagnose your driver needs and down load them from secure sites. The problem being that the software costs usually about $30, and there's no guarantee that it will resolve your problem. But with dogged persistence, drivers can still be found,... only after sorting through countless links to this damned software.

Eventually I found an updated copy of the drivers for my Motherboard and installed them, Beauty!!!... I have an Ethernet Controller at last and according to the Device manager, it is working properly.   All I can say is, "D'ya wanna bet"?

Hah! absolutely no change whatsoever, so what's next I've checked all of the settings, I've Googled for all manner of problems and answers and I must admit that there were lots and lots of "solutions",  each and every one of them different, not only that, none of them worked.  To add insult to injury, my Email client has now refused to access the connection to the server, I tried Mozilla and Outlook Express and both come up with an Error 0x000CCC90, yep, more gobbledegook, but it appears that this code is supposed to indicate that I have my settings arranged for a secure server and this is not available. I checked my Email settings and guess what,.... No!, my settings are correct so I deleted both programs and reinstalled them,... nothing. My last thing was to Restore my settings to an earlier time, which I did, this took over an hour but had a singular lack of success.

I have been able to access the emails via a webmail client, but as yet i have no success on the home front with my installed programs.

The one good thing to come of all this was that I checked my WiFi connection with my Netbook, and got five bars of signal strength all over the house, and with a little messing about got online, so I guess I do have a backup if the worst comes to the worst. It's as slow as a wet weekend in Wagga Wagga, but what would you expect from a $300 laptop.

I have resigned myself to the fact that I possibly have a Motherboard fault, so it looks like a new 'puta might be in the offing. In the meantime I'm gunna stay at home and sulk Angry

Haha ... you know we fix this kind of problem, right? Tongue

We have internode ADSL here and a wireless LAN so The Child can sulk in her room watching TV on the laptop, all via wireless.

Fotunately the neighbours got around to securing *their* wireless LAN because for a while there the laptop kept wanting to join their network not ours. How rude of it.

Yes, when I first got my netbook I had a similar experience, and having little knowlege of what it was all about at the time took no notice as I had no intention at that time to use it on the net and i never had a wireless modem anyway. Once I changed over to our new plan, I received a wireless modem and I did use the Wireless several times merely to get some Windows updates and drivers for it.

There have been several WiFi accounts showing as active in the area, including one very low powered one that was apparently unsecured.  As far as I know my account was always secured,... Sorry,... Cheesy   I wonder how many there are just locally?, I have noted four My next door neighbours and your own network are often detected by my laptop,...  but no longer, as I now merely use it as my music server and safe storage for my passwords etc., so I have disabled the wireless network on it for security reasons, I was getting just too many passwords and various other private guff that I needed to keep from prying eyes.

I have since taken delivery of my new 'puta and all my earlier problems have gone out the window. My next job is to make absolutely sure I have everything that I want off of the old one and "give it a birthday"  a complete format and re-load. I can't get rid of it yet, as some of my ancient  software refuses to work on Windows 7.  e.g. there are no twain drivers for Windows 7 it appears.

Ohhh,.. well, I guess, it is Microsoft after all.
