"I'm Bored"

For those of you who have not been out past the effluent ponds recently there is a major project underway,  with trucks and excavators busy deepening the western end of the evaporation pond (the one closest to Jamestown).  Also an area has been cleared and made ready for the installation of an effluent treatment plant, which is presently under construction in Adelaide.   The local work at the moment is being undertaken by Ridley's Plumbing of Murray Bridge and is being funded as part of a $20M grant to the Local Government Authorities. Details of which were published in the NAC Minutes for Sep.2009 Item 13.1.3 http://www.nacouncil.sa.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/Minutes_2009_September__15.pdf

From what I have been told, the pond is being enlarged, and deepened in three separate sections.  The idea being to increase the storage volume and  also lessen the evaporation so that the treated water will be available for later use.  I presume that this water will be used on areas such as the town oval.

It has been nearly three weeks since my last photo showing the deepening of the effluent scheme overflow pond, and in that time quite a lot of earth has been moved.  In fact much more than is apparent at first sight, the panorama below does not do the size of the excavation justice although some appreciation is gained when you see the top dozer is well and truly below the level of the sides.

Photo by kind permission of Jason Ridley: Site manager.

I have been going out and having a look at what is going on about every month or so.   Although I only have a basic understanding of the project, it is not hard to appreciate the huge amount of work that has been done.

I could not ask too many questions last week because the wet weather had made the site unsafe for work, and most of the persons were absent including the site manager. I was fortunate to find two employees engaged on work relating to the actual treatment plan who allowed me to take several photos of the progress.

The two large storage ponds have been almost completed with the Westernmost one having been scraped down to it's full depth. here you can see the state of the earthworks which were very slippery and treacherous, I had visions of me slipping on my rump and going home with a "wet bum and no fish" so to speak. I guarantee that I was three inches taller by the time I had walked back out to my vehicle, such was the buildup of clay on my boots.

and the one to the East of it having had the lining installed and is now partially filled with water.

This photo is taken from the far side of the ponds standing on the southern embankment looking towards the town.

It's pretty simple, I use a program called MGI PhotoVista.  It's pretty much just a matter of selecting the photos that you need and clicking the button. As you can see below, I allow almost 50% overlap, this is excessive and it will work with as little as about 10% but I like to think that I give it the best possible chance of doing a great job. You will also notice the difference in colour at the edges, it re renders the joins almost perfectly. The only time it is noticeable is if for example a cloud comes over on one photo while others are in bright sunlight, conversely it does do some totally mind boggling things like cut out duplicate persons (people who have moved between photos). I might put up a couple of examples of in the Computer Software thread in the next day or so.

It does have drawbacks, like the stupid little non expandable window that it operates in, but it does give the best results as far as blending the colours at the joins.

Oh wow... I need something like this. Can you get it as a free download at all? For a mac?

It's a pity, as a few months ago I had two photos that really needed stitching together.... a group of Ute's at a Ute show. And no one I knew had any software to do it.

Unfortunately it appears that the software was sold to a company called Roxio, who have since stopped marketing it.

This is a great pity, as I think that in spite of it's downfalls, it is still a good program in terms of the quality of the job that it does.
