The copper mine mentioned in your post has always fascinated me. The only copper mines in this area were at Spalding near the Bundaleer Reservoir (Wheal Sarah 1858) and there is a mention of a mine called Neat's approximately 3.5 miles NE of Caltowie made in 1890. The wheal sarah is known to me, but i have never been able to locate where Neat's was. The Neate family lived about 1 mile NE of Caltowie. There are no obvious signs of any mining ever having been done in the area indicated, although the Record of Mines of SA published in 1908 gives it a few lines describing a rocky outcrop showing obvious signs of copper mineralisation and several pits having been sunk showing areas of rich ore. Also an entry in the Hobart Mercury from 9th dec. 1890 says, A telegram from Caltowie states that im- portant developments have occurred at Neat's copper mine. In cutting down Dunstans shaft for timbering splendid ore was struck, estimated to go over 40 per cent Copper. I guess I'll have to ask the current owner if he knows anything.

Hi Dianne, no, I haven't even had a chance to go and ask about Neate's Copper mine as yet. Trevor Zanker is now the owner of the property, and I have not seen him to speak to in years, I guess that one day I'll have to give him a ring, but I won't do it until I have time to follow it up if I find out anything.
Those old news paper headlines are really something, some where I have a copy of the rules that had to be observed at the Caltowie North School, I can't remember them all, but I do remember the one about students having to bring their own wood for the fireplace on cold days. I'll see if I can find them.
I think that the story about 9pm closing had something to do with allowing those in other jobs, time to do their shopping,.. obviously the shop assistants had to do any shopping in their lunch hour or similar.
I've been as busy as the proverbial "One armed Irish Fiddler" just lately, tomorrow I will have another full day helping one of the ladies from the history group at a meeting being held to discuss some more details for the Centenary of Secondary Education Weekend. From what I'm told it might turn out to be an all day affair.

Had to laugh at bringing your own fire wood for the fire, if it was anything like our days we were the fire monitors and all the teachers pets sat at the desks next to it and you sat as far away as possible and froze your little off. Ray it sounds like you are going to have a very successful reunion, I know how you feel as I am helping to do a fund raiser for our Cancer Support Group, we have decided on an Auction and getting people organised is a task all of it's own. We have holden Jackets with the teams Signatures, football, basketball memorabilia and so on. It is a very huge job approaching all the big businesses and convincing them to part with their cash or goods, I am lucky that way working in business all my life I got to know a lot of people. Good luck Ray. Yes I have missed the news clips, I will try and put them up as often as I can, I find them interesting and your input makes them more interesting. Be nice if we could get some feed back from others.
