My first post.
I heard on the ABC local news the other day a group (can't remember which one) was meeting in Jamestown and meeting for lunch at the Belalie Hotel. Does this mean that the Hotel has re-opened - hope so!
Thanks in advance

Welcome Rob!  Grin

I understand it is open and re-named the Magpie & Globe. I seem to recall that it used to be called the Globe way back when it was first opened - forgive me if I'm wrong.
Cheers

Thanks
I often arrive in Jamestown about 7pm and used to go to the Belalie for a good meal. Was and hopefully still is better for a pub meal than the competition in Jamestown. Caltowie pub is better but a little out of the way.
Thanks again

Wasn't/isn't the Yongala pub called the Globe?

Shame they couldn't leave it as the Belalie.

Hi Utegirl
The Yongala Hotel is the Globe Hotel.
Wonder if the Belalie has changed owners/ publicans/ managers?
I suspect that it will have to introduce pokies to survive which will be a shame.

Hi Guys,
I was in the Library this weekend looking through old newspapers and found this:

Looks like the Belalie may have been originally called the Globe after all? Well at least it was in 1911. I might try to track down when the name changed next visit to the Library - unless any locals know?

The name.(My version})

Yes it was named "Globe Hotel".

The story I was told that as Yongala, Jamestown and Port Pirie (not sure if included Gladstone) all had a "Globe Hotel" and due to all the kegs and bottled beer etc. being delivered by rail, the "goods" were occasionally mixed up. This must have upset some of the Publicans as it may have caught them "short".

Also the Globe Hotel was involved in a fire. When! I don,t know. Well before my time.
(Had this discussion recently with a Jamestownite and he reckons I've got the wrong Hotel).

I'm more fascinated by the price of a "Motor Car", starting at just 325 pounds!   Shocked   And that "XMas" was being used back then, as apposed to Christmas. heh...

How about that set of teeth the Dentist is advertising! Scary!

Found some more about "The Globe" in the book "Jamestown - a Pictorial Study, by Leith Cooper"

I was surprised it wasn't known as the Belalie until 1958  Shocked  Am I wrong or does it look like the old photos of the Globe are mirror images?

No, the photos aren't mirror images Adminer. It's just that the pub was extended further down Irvine street, (to the left).
You can see the building that is now the Bakery on the right hand side, it is only single story in the top two shots, but has had the second story added in the lower photo.

I can see that now - it sure has grown since the original.
